Piloña

A very good example of Romanesque Art is "Santa Maria de Villamayor", a very beautiful church, with its apse and side door which are the last constructive remain of the original monastery.
The primitive church of "San Juan de Berbio" was also Romanesque, although it was alterated along 18th century. Nowadays , ithas been recently restored, and it is even possible to pray there.

"San Pedro de Beloncio" church is also from medieval time although its primitive building has been alterated several times. Other churches in the municipality preserve architectural elements from diferent historical periods, for instance: churches of Ques, Cereceda, Sorribes, Lodeña, Borines and Espinaredo; and others like "San Antonio de Padua" in Infiesto or "San Pedro" in Villamayor, this one is neobarrocian style.
Refering to civil architecture, there are also a lot of manor houses and palaces all over the parishes of Piloña, most of them dated between 16th and 18 centuries. Some remarkable examples are: "La Torre del Omedal" (fortified tower) located in Miyares, "El Torreón de Lodeña", Sorribes Palace, Cutre Palace (La Goleta), Rubianes Palace (Cereceda), "Las Huelgas" Palace (Villamayor), and many other interesting buildings.
Iglesia de Sta.Maria de Villamayor       There are also many examples of "architecture indiana" (a sort of colonial architecture developed due to american migration) all over the territory.
It is also interesting, a trout farm located in "El Orrin", with very good facilities and well-known all over the country. Nowadays, there are different projects to restore and use it for recreational purposes. In its gardens you can enjoy yourself admiring ancient trees and we all hope that; in the future, a botanic garden will be built in this beautiful place.
There are also typical constructions (made of wood) in all villages of Asturas. They have been used as granaries troughout centuries and they are called "horreos" and "paneras". They are made of wood, and most of them have a balustrade where cobs used to be hung in order to be dried; Espinaredo preserves a valuable group of them, and it is visited by many tourists.
From a cultural point of view, Piloña has been always a very important place. Due to its location, it was one of the municipalities visited by pilgrims who followed The Way of Saint James to Santiago de Compostela. Nowadays, there are several cultural associations (Pialonia) and sport clubs (Grupo Montañero Vizcares) which organize different leisure and cultural activities during the year.
