This municipality is surrounded by mountains with a wide range of heights. Its capital is just 150m above sea, but there is a special mountain, called Vizcares, which is so emblematic for everybody, and there is even a mountaineering club called "Grupo Montañero Vizcares".
Piloña is part of river Sella hydrographic basin, and in its river (also called Piloña) several streams and brooks flow. River Piloña runs along the territory and flows in river Sella (Parres).
Piloña has got an oceanic climate: warm, rainy (especially in winter) and with an acceptable thermal oscillation.
The cretacea area of Piloña is so fertile and there are big forests, full of beeches, oaks, chestnuts and hazelnuts trees. In the lowlands, valleys are used to crop wallnut trees and apple trees ; the last ones in "pumaradas" (typical name used to call a full of apple trees field in Asturias). Mountain slopes are covered by greenfields which turn this landscape into a natural reserve.
